Recently Philip Adams interviewed Associate Professor Tony Moore and Emeritus Professor Michael Quinlan on Radio National's Late Night Live.

Alongside those Convicts sent to Van Diemen's land as political prisoners, there were many convicts who started to organise and agitate against unfair working conditions. Hamish Maxwell-Stewart in his research from the conduct records held in the Tasmanian Archive Convicts has observed many convicts recording neglect their duty. as a protest for the work they are being required to undertake.

By the 1850s, the colony with all it's penal conventions had became one of the first to give all working men the vote, and was soon seen as the social laboratory of the world.
